Your interior design might be unhip if… you have violated more than a couple of the rules in our list below. But, fret not, fellow fashion finder! We’re here to also tell you how to mitigate your “Outs” with our suggested “Ins”. Read on and freshen up!
In the Bedroom
In: Monograms
Out: Comforters
Like making a statement? You’re in luck this season! Monogramming bedding, particularly pillows, is way “in”. Make sure you have them professionally done, and that the style and font matches your décor, and your interior will be current and bold. These luxurious accent pillows were placed in a master bedroom in a downtown penthouse by JEI.
This may pain some people, and we are truly sorry to report that comforters- pretty much all kinds- are not quite as fashion forward as they used to be. We know, we know… you hate to part with it for sentimental reasons and is was fabulous for a while, it really was!
But, we are here to let you know now that it’s time has passed. It may be difficult to let go, but you have our full support. Try thinking vintage chic quilt or elegant duvet instead.
On the Walls
In: Wallpaper
Out: Wall Paper Borders
We’re pretty pleased to report that walls now can be fun again and express the bold moods you want for your ambience. Ditch the drab paint colors and move forward with large prints in bright colors. This is one of our favs.
While it was once pretty sharp to line your wall space with chunky intricate wallpaper borders, the time has come to relinquish this notion. Crisp symmetrical lines on your wall’s edges are preferable to the imbalance those old borders create. If this news upsets you, please take solace in the fact that enlightenment leads to “all virtue and wisdom.” Perhaps Buddha was not referring to wallpaper, but we tend to think he was.
Accessories
In: Brass Finishes
Out: Over-sized Tassels
Gone are the days of fearing this bold finish. Brandish your brass accents tastefully with nice warm tones on accessories such as lamps and hardware. Gentle soft satin and hand rubbed brass finishes are subtle but make a statement for your space. We found these…
Brace yourselves. The chunky tassels you once had garnishing your furniture and window coverings are a trend of the past unless your design style is antiques and opulence. You don’t have to retire all of your fringy trimmings, only the ones that can double as weapons. If you choose to toss a tassel into your design mix, keep it simple and small. We and your draperies will thank you.
Feathered Fowl
In: Big Bird
Out: Little Bird
When you begin to see large peacock feather prints and expansive sparrow design, remember that we told you so here first. Keep it tasteful and understated by limiting the color palette, but don’t be shy to embrace this design trend!
Little Birdie. He’s cute, we know. But he’s out. Little birds will almost certainly be back in style… eventually. So, you may not want to discard the accent pieces you already have that sports the sparrow. Maybe just stash them for a while. In the mean time, let the big bird be heard.
