If you reside in Austin with us, you’re aware that we’re not as influenced by trends as some other parts of the country and Europe . Other cities hold their breath to be told what’s hot and what’s not. We like to know, but Austin is known for it’s independent spirit. And we like it that way.
We’re here to tell you now that being ultra trendy isn’t all that trendy anymore. Hey is that a trend? Anyway, this doesn’t necessarily mean that something that is in the forefront of the interior design world is necessarily out. Some things that are hot are just simply good. So, here’s our take on what we think is in that’s out, and what’s in that is just darn good.
Tiffany’s Blue
In But Out or Just Plain Good?
This timeless color, established as Tiffany’s signature color in 1837, is actually protected as a color trademark by Tiffany & Co. and is produced as a private custom color by Pantone. It is not publicly available and is not printed in the Pantone Matching System swatch books, but we can get pretty close. And we think it’s pretty awesome.
Trends may dictate a change of complimentary colors that should accompany Tiffany’s blue, but the shade will never be dismissed as passé.

Trendy now? Well, lets’ just say that the New Sex in the City Movie was replete with pieces from the genre. But, guess what. It’s just good. And we think it may always be. The Hallings Secretary below by Hickory Chair in a scene from the recent blockbuster looks just as glam and gorgeous today as it did when this style was first introduced in France six decades ago.
Marvelous!

Just so you know, JEIDesign carries this piece, and it is still in stock.
Ultra contemporary
In But Out or Just Plain Good?

Admittedly, this scheme can be pulled off with the right touch (as in the accessory design above), but done without care, the overly-modern style can read “bad night in Vegas”. It’s still very “in” in places like Miami and, well, Vegas, but we’re going with “out” on this one.
Not so much.
Overstuffed Furniture
In But Out or Just Plain Good?

This trend made its debut in the early 90’s and wants terribly to return today. A few blogs and designers are trying to reclaim this furniture fashion as comfy chic, but we don’t agree. This one, albeit it fantastic for naps and pampered pooches, is out for us.
Done and done.
Neon Color Stories
In But Out or Just Plain Good?

While some brighter shades can still be attractive in an appropriate space, if you need to squint your eyes to look directly into a wall color, or you feel a brain zap when you enter a room, the neon is too intense, and that is not a good thing.
This may be “in”, but it’s out for us.
Schumacher Tree of Life Fabric
In But Out or Just Plain Good?

Often referred to as a “retro” design by Schumacher, this print keeps coming back and we think it is not just in but also so very good! Julie actually had draperies made from this classic pattern in the 80’s. It is still used globally today, and World Market just recently released a table cloth using this pattern. A quintessential example of timeless design, the original Tree of Life fabric was released by Schumacher in the 1930’s, but the origins of Tree of Life date back to the 1500’s.

An Indienne fabric with large stylized flowers blooming from heavy branches, all parts of the fabric are patterned, and it is available in tan, white, and blue.
Good. Very good.
